The Art of a Slower, Cosier October

There's a reason so many people quietly love October. The pressure to be outside and busy all the time eases, and there's a cultural permission slip to stay in, light a candle, and just be at home. The Danish call this quality hygge — a sense of warmth, togetherness, and contentment — and coastal autumn is the perfect backdrop for it.
Reset Your Living Spaces
Summer living often means things get spread out, sandy, and a little chaotic. October is a natural moment to bring things back in. Consider swapping lightweight throws for heavier knit blankets, adding a few warm-toned cushions, and moving a favourite chair closer to the window so you can watch the rain from somewhere comfortable. These are small shifts, but they meaningfully change how a room feels.
Lean Into Seasonal Cooking
Autumn produce is genuinely wonderful — squash, apples, pears, root vegetables, and hearty greens are all at their peak. Cooking with what's in season is both economical and satisfying. Soups, stews, and roasted vegetables don't require complicated technique, and the process of cooking itself can be a form of mindfulness after a busy day.
- Try a new recipe each weekend through October
- Batch-cook a big pot of soup and freeze portions for hectic weeknight evenings
- Visit a local farmers' market before they wind down for the year
Create a Wind-Down Ritual
Shorter days naturally signal the body to slow down, but many of us override that with screens and stimulation right up until bedtime. October is a lovely time to experiment with a gentle evening ritual: a cup of herbal tea, a book instead of a phone, or even just ten minutes of quiet.
Get Outside Anyway
Rain doesn't have to mean hibernation. A proper waterproof jacket and good footwear make a morning walk in autumn genuinely enjoyable — the air is fresh, the trails are quiet, and the colours are extraordinary. Aim for at least a few outdoor moments each week; the contrast of coming inside to warmth afterwards is half the pleasure.
Autumn is not a season to merely endure on the way to winter. With a small amount of intention, it can be one of the most nourishing times of the entire year.
